What is your motto?

“Fast, Cheap or Right. Pick two.” That’s a variation of the old “Iron Triangle” of project management. It’s not that you can’t do all three, but it is about prioritization. Prioritizing is Leadership 101, and projects tend to suffer when there isn’t clear direction.

What book are you currently reading?

Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman. I will profess that I was told to read this book by my child’s school to understand their curriculum design but I can see why Kahneman won the Nobel Prize for his work with behavioral economics. There’s lots of fodder for marketers in this book.

What is your company’s philosophy/approach to marketing?

As a Hawaii-focused, leisure destination carrier, Hawaiian Airlines is committed to making each guests’ Hawaii vacation start the minute they board the aircraft. To that end, all of our marketing supports that brand promise. Whether it’s an ad talking about our complimentary meal service (would you ever invite a guest to your home and not feed them?), or providing a little bit of Hawaii at a brand activation event in New York City, we always ensure that our message is authentic to Hawaii. Product and service design, along with marketing communications are all tailored to treat each traveler as a guest in our Hawaii home.

American Marketing Association Hawaii Recognizes Top Marketing Programs from 2013

Earlier this month the Hawaii chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA Hawaii) celebrated the winners of its 37th annual AMA Hawaii Marketer of the Year awards. Taking the top award for marketing in 2013 was Hawaiian Host, Inc. who was recognized with the Marketer of the Year award.

Additional honorees include Hospice Hawaii, for Best Non-Profit Marketing, Hawaiian Telcom, Inc. for Best Marketing of a New Product or Service, Aloha Petroleum, Ltd. for Best E-Marketing, Focus Opus for Best Rebrand Marketing and Hawaii Fashion Incubator for Best Marketing of an Event.

All companies and organizations were recognized at AMA Hawaii’s annual Hawaii Marketer of the Year Awards Luncheon at the Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki on April 10.

“Hawaii’s ever-changing business landscape demands strategic marketing in order for companies and organizations to reach their target audiences,” said Tammy Chang, AMA Hawaii president. “This year we celebrated Hawaii’s top marketers and all that they’ve done to continue to pave the way in demonstrating the importance and value of marketing.”

AMA Hawaii also presented a $500 scholarship to a member of a Hawaii-based AMA collegiate chapter.
